Darn..Has it been sunny at all? If the sun hasn't shined since about Thursday, then it would have run out about Saturday night. The current battery was only 20% charged which would have lasted for about 2 days without any sun. With sun, it should pick up an extra day for each fully sunny day...
I could come in tomorrow and charge it up, where it would then last about 5 days without sun.
Now if the sun suddenly came out, it would come back on.

It was dead. I held services for the battery. It was an old series of 10 lead-acid "D" cells that were popular and expensive in the 70s. I had bought them in about 1980 and never used them. They took a charge and ran a 7A load for about 15 minutes so I decided that they were good to go and installed them into the GeoTrans, fully charged. They ran for a couplke days and then I installed the solar panel, but the panel was poorly oriented (in a bush) and I guess it didn't keep up. The batteries went down during the night and the voltage went to 1.6V and nothing I could do would get it to go over 4.5 volts. Dead.
I bought a 7.2 V 2AH pack from Radio Shack for $10 and charged it for about 1.5 hours (out of the 5 to get full charge but I had to go) Installed the painted solar panel on a 7 ft post pointed south. If the sun shines (It wasn't when I left) then the battery should make it. If not I will return and charge it better. I am doing some tests on another panel to see just how much charge I get when cloudy.

I posted this for Steve K9DCI. N6XFC
I subscribe to Yahoo RDF-USA and saw AG4WH, Gordon's post about the GeoHunts. Nice idea.
I created an Excel spreadsheet which takes up to 5 locations and associated bearings, then calculates the coordinates of the fox. This is a weighted average of the intersections of the lines of bearing. Each bearing also has a quality factor - the more confident you are that is it good, the more it is weighted in the calculation. It also has a map. Though it's for my county, you can change the coordinates to your liking and add your own landmarks - I have mostly towns. It may be crude, but anyone with reasonable Excel ability can fix it. You are welcome to it, just give me credit.

It has been working for a week. It is doing its job in that it has been found by several "new" hunters and several others have shown interest. I have not had any complaints from hams or others about any interference and the neighbors seem to have accepted their new sun catcher.
The only complaint from the finders is that the sign in sheet got wet due to a hole in the bag and a "new" bag was was furnished by N6XFC, thanks Steve.
The batteries would have lasted for a bout 10 days without the solar panel so the next week will show just what the panel can do.
I hope to service the unit next week with some nice camo paint on the panel (it is bright red now) and mount the panel on a pole for better efficiency.

Found it today 11/29/2008 at 3:20 PM. Note the neighbors are noticing many folks coming around now with trucks, etc. May want to approach on foot to keep a low profile before they take action. Anyway, great hide. Thanks -73

Talked to WB6ARK Roger and he has 320 true from Knott/Chapman in Garden Grove at S1. I still don't hear a peep in Orange. Might go out Sunday so no conflicts with WWNIATT.

That was Fun. Found it at 11:45. As I was packing up Deryl and Ray showed up.
You can use that Rock texture spray paint on the etch-a sketch. I have that on some of my geocaches.
Funny thing about this hunt was I told my wife places my bearings went over and she was right. Her cousin lives a stone throw away.
Deryl and I both have pictures. Do you want them? His are better than mine. I had cheep camera phone.
